Warren Oates Pencil Sketch
(C.O’Hearn 2012)
Warren Oates is an American actor known for his roles in cult classics like “Two-Lane Blacktop” (1971) and reoccurring parts in the films of Sam Peckinpah, including “The Wild Bunch” (1969) and a personal favourite: “Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia” (1974). Oates is a consummate character actor and a supreme master of badassery. The gritty voice, the soft squint that can turn vicious with the drag of a corner-crooked cigarette - not to mention a stellar slew of quotable one-liners delivered with a comedic precision.
Oates worked on numerous films and television shows throughout the 60’s and 70’s but his career was sadly cut short in 1982 when he died of a heart attack at the age of 54. A friend of mine posted a really cool doc on the 30th anniversary of his death, which occurred earlier this this year. You can watch it here.
Oates has such an interesting character face, I may have to do some more studies….
